MOKA Display Typeface

Typeface Design

University Project

September 2024

[07]

MOKA is a custom sans serif typeface created as part of a university typography project. The aim was to design an expressive yet functional typeface that could work as a display font while maintaining legibility.

The concept was inspired by an illustration of a small head and big body figure, which I translated into type by using a reduced x-height paired with bold, exaggerated strokes. This playful exploration of proportion gave the typeface a distinctive personality while keeping it practical for design use.

The design process involved sketching, digital refinement, and testing letterforms across different scales and applications. I carefully balanced consistency, spacing, and rhythm while preserving the expressive qualities of the concept.

The final outcome was a bold and characterful display typeface that combines playfulness with clarity. MOKA demonstrates how experimental ideas can be developed into functional letterforms, offering both strong visual personality and usability across contemporary design applications.
